Differences in power largely due to the compression ratio and the carburetor. Challenger uses two-barrel carburetor and 9.3:1 compression ratio. Both the Challenger and Challenger Special High Performance featuring four-barrel carburetor, but the first featuring a compression ratio of 10:1 and 10.5:1 compression ratio and features. Unlike other 289s, Challenger High Performance is equipped with solid lifters and exhaust headers, rather than hydraulic lifters and exhaust manifolds.
