Shelby Mustang offers two different machines, 200 and 289, although 289 was available with three different power ratings. The 200 cubic inch six cylinder standard equipment, and produces 120 horsepower. The 289 cubic inch V-8 engine is available with either 200 horsepower, which is called "Challenger," 225 horsepower, which is called "Challenger Special," or with a 271 horsepower, which is called the "Challenger High Performance." Differences in power largely due to the compression ratio and the carburetor. Challenger uses two-barrel carburetor and 9.3:1 compression ratio. Both the Challenger and Challenger Special High Performance featuring four-barrel carburetor, but the first featuring a compression ratio of 10:1 and 10.5:1 compression ratio and features. Unlike other 289s, Challenger High Performance is equipped with solid lifters and exhaust headers, rather than hydraulic lifters and exhaust manifolds.


For the transmission system, there are several types of Mustang Shelby :
  • A 3-speed manual transmission is standard equipment for the six-cylinder engine, and featuring floor-mounted shifter to the standard pattern of "H".
  • A 3-speed manual transmission is standard equipment with the powerful and the engine Challenger Special Challenger.
  • A 4-speed manual transmission is also available as optional equipment.
All machines, with the exception of Challenger High Performance, which is available with 3-speed automatic transmission, called the "Cruise-O-Matic," featuring floor-mounted "T-bar" handle. 4-speed manual transmission is the only transmission available with High Performance engine Challenger.
